The Urban Art Festival WALLCOME brings together nine internationally renowned artists in the small Thuringian town Schmalkalden. Invited by the native artists Akut and Case from Ma’Claim, they will create eight murals from June to October.

WALLCOME

Akteursbasierte Projektidee

Actor-based Idea
Inspired by Urban Art

The initiators of the project are Falk Lehmann (pseudonym Akut) and Andreas von Chrzanowski (Case), both proper locals of Schmalkalden and internationally successful urban artists. Their first encounters with hip hop culture and urban art in particular took place during their teenage years in the 1990s. They found a home in the cultural community centre “Villa K” e.V.; Akut still works in its managing committee today. “Villa K” provided them with a place to paint, organise events with friends/co-artists, establish ties at home and abroad and gradually develop into internationally renowned artists.
Akut on the intention behind the project: “To cut a long story short, Schmalkalden is the place where we – Falk Lehmann (Akut) and Andreas von Chrzanowski (Case) – were born and raised, it is here that we started painting. In this sense, WALLCOME is a kind of retrospective celebrating twenty years of Akut and Case.
Painting led us away from this town and around the world, but now we come back and bring along artists/friends/colleagues who we have met during our development and who work with us. It is a gift to the town. This gift will be an art project which exudes an aura of international cultural exchange and therefore promotes our native town of Schmalkalden as a venue.”

FESTIVAL

Doch bisher passierte all dies eher im Stillen.

The Mainweek

A schedule can be found at „Dates„.
From 8 to 14 September, the main event week will illuminate all that urban art has to offer. By now, more than two months have passed since the first brushstrokes were applied, the first dashes of colour splattered. Local and international artists have designed five walls so far and have thus helped make Schmalkalden a little bit more colourful. As yet, most of this has passed without much ado. Now, during the festival week, the interested public will be able to actually experience urban art. In the course of seven days, WALLCOME, the registered cultural association “Villa K”, the town of Schmalkalden and all the supporters want to exhibit the rich diversity of urban art.

For this reason, the festival week between 8 and 14 September encompasses a series of documentaries about urban art, a symposium with four on-topic lectures, a workshop with a school group, a graffiti battle and the opening of the exhibition “From the streets into the woods” at Wilhelmsburg Castle. Simultaneously, visitors are invited to sneak a peek at the creation of two new murals, one by the German street art duo Herakut and the other one by the Cambodian-American artist Andrew Hem. The exhibition at Wilhelmsburg Castle features the artists whose murals contributed to WALLCOME’s success as well as local street artists and urban artists. The exhibition will be on view at Wilhelmsburg Castle from 13 September to 30 October. The visitors will come across paintings, sculptures, prints, installations, video and light art, all of which allow a brief glimpse of the potential and the creativity of Central Germany. The opening takes place on 11 September.

Right at the outset of the festival week, four documentaries provide different perspectives on urban art, also highlighting social aspects of this art form. The directors’ different approaches convey how much or how little urban art matters to society. Another question that will be addressed is ‘What comes after graffiti?’ The lecture series “Urban Art as a Vocation” comprises of four hour-long talks in the town hall of Schmalkalden. The first two speakers sharing their experience will hold their talks on Friday, September 12. Originally from Frankfurt, Jasmin Siddiqui or “Hera” forms part of the artist duo “Herakut” whose “Giant Storybook Project” recently created an international stir. Joining her from Dresden is Jens Besser, an artist, author and initiator of the projects “CityBilder Dresden” and “Urban Script Görlitz”. On Saturday, Erik Mahnkopf, an entrepreneur, creative director and co-founder of a communications agency will give a lecture. Finally, Dr. Heike Derwanz from Hamburg will speak as a cultural anthropologist and author of a book on careers in street art and their importance for the design sector.

Supported by the cultural association “Villa K”, the initiator of WALLCOME; a group of students from a secondary school in Steinbach-Hallenberg will enjoy a workshop during the festival week. The young generation gets the chance to take their first steps in urban art. Each of the participants will create a poster-sized individual work on wallpaper. Spray paint, marker and acrylic paint will be used as work material. Being street art in the proper sense, the resulting pieces can be “wallpapered” everywhere in the urban space. If possible, there will be a collaborative artwork, too. Moreover, personal stickers can be created during the workshop. The festival week is rounded off by a classic graffiti contest, a so-called battle. In the battle, different graffiti sprayers or groups of sprayers compete for the best piece. However, the battle is not merely a contest, but also aids the exchange of different identities between regional and international urban artists. The evening of 13 September features an art auction supported by „Meine Kultur“, an urban art tour and – as a final event – a live concert of the Thuringian DJ and producer Nas’D and the Hanoverian rapper Spax.

The Cultural Association “Villa K” e.V.

The registered cultural association „Villa K“ e.V. was founded in April 1991. The members of the association worked on an old villa in Schmalkalden in the East German province of Thuringia: They wanted to transform the house into an accepted cultural community centre. From early on, the main focus of the project was local youth culture. Due to its exemplary projects in the field of open and social youth work, the name “Villa K” became famous throughout the whole region. It was one of the main objectives of the association to provide a home for the different youth subcultures. Tolerating each other in everyday life is a past and present maxim of the “Villa”.
More than 23 years after the cultural association was founded, the “Villa” looks back on an eventful history. Among all the projects “Villa K” has been involved in, working with hip hop culture, particularly the graffiti scene, holds a special place. Using previous experience in this field, various workshops and events could be set up. Primarily, “Villa K” addresses youths in the graffiti scene. The association aims to raise their awareness for the possibilities and the socially fixed parameters of this pastime.
From day one, the activities of the cultural association “Villa K” e.V. have relied on the continued support by volunteers. These volunteers have kept the association alive for the past years and will do so in the future. The same holds true for the numerous partners the association has found over the years; they too have done their share of the successful work. These partners are the city and district administrations, other youth and cultural associations as well as umbrella organisations.
